Live crashes during startup after selecting a custom VST folder

  • Live Versions: 1 - 9
  • Operating System: Win XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 10

Symptom

An incorrect VST directory had been chosen, for example the root directory of the C:\ drive. Live is always crashing when scanning the VST folder.

Reason

VST plug-ins are .dll files. Live can not distinguish VST .dlls from other .dlls, for example drivers. If the custom VST folder contains non-VST .dlls, Live might crash as it tries to interpret them as VSTs.

Solution

Please reset Live.

Additional Information

Note that on some Windows systems the AppData folder is hidden by default

To avoid the reset of all preferences settings, it is also possible to hold the [ALT] key during the restart of Live to temporarily deactivate the VST folder.
