"The folder you're trying to use already exists. You can only install Live to a new folder" (Windows)

If you already have the latest version of Live is installed on your computer, the default installation folder already exists. This means installing Live again to the same location is not possible, and a new folder is needed, which results in the error message:  "The folder you're trying to use already exists. You can only install Live to a new folder."

You can resolve this by uninstalling the existing Live installation following this guide:

Uninstalling Live (Windows)

You can then install a fresh version of Live, following this guide:

Installing Ableton Live

If this error is not resolved by uninstalling Live following the steps linked above, you can delete the existing folder from your computer before re-installing. To do this:

  1. Go to the Windows control panel and select "Folder Options" and then "View."
  2. Under hidden files and folders, select "Show hidden files and folder types."
  3. Now the C:/ProgramData folder should be visible and you can delete the Ableton folder manually.
  4. Then install the new version of Live.
