Troubleshooting the Splice Integration in Ableton Live
This article covers system requirements and step-by-step solutions for the most common issues with the Splice integration in Ableton Live on macOS and Windows.
- System requirements
- Features not available in the integration
- Updating the integration
- Common issues & fixes
- Blank screen instead of Splice User Interface
- Integration fails to load after auto-update
- Search with sound issues
- Cannot drag samples into Live
- Login problems
- Getting logged out automatically (macOS)
System requirements
The Splice integration is available in Ableton Live 12.3 and later, across all editions: Suite, Standard, Intro, and Lite.
- macOS: macOS 12 Monterey or later.
- Windows: Windows 10 or later (Microsoft Edge WebView2 required — pre-installed on Windows 11, downloadable from the Microsoft website on Windows 10)
- An active internet connection is required at all times.
Updating the integration
From Live 12.4, the Splice integration supports automatic updates. Live checks for a new version during startup and shows an Update button in the Splice panel if one is available. Click Update to install it.
If no internet connection is available when Live starts, the update check is skipped without any notification. Restart Live while connected to the internet to check again.
Common issues & fixes
Blank screen instead of Splice UI
If the Splice panel shows a blank screen, follow the steps below.
Windows
This is usually caused when Edge WebView2 runtime is outdated or missing.
- Open Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update) and install any available updates. Edge WebView2 is included in standard Windows updates.
- If the issue persists, download and install Edge WebView2 directly from the Microsoft website. (https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2)
- Restart Live after the installation is complete.
macOS
This could be due to a VPN interfering with the Splice integration. If you are using a VPN:
- Quit Live.
- Turn the VPN off.
- Launch Live.
- If the issue persists, contact Ableton Support.
Splice fails to load after auto-update
After an automatic update, Live may fail to load the Splice integration on launch. To resolve this:
- Quit Live.
- Delete the Splice folder at the following location for your system:
- Mac: /Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/Ableton/Splice
- Win: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Ableton\Splice
- Relaunch Live. Splice will reinstall automatically.
“Search with Sound” issues
- No audio / silent query: The selected audio region may be too short. Search with sound requires a minimum selection of 1 bar. A warning appears inside the tool when this is the case — extend your selection and try again.
- Only paid sounds appear in results: This is expected on free Splice plans. To access a wider library, consider upgrading your plan at splice.com.
Cannot drag samples into Live (⊘ symbol)
If a ⊘ symbol appears when dragging samples from the Splice integration into Live, follow these steps below in order, testing after each one. In many cases, the first or second step alone will resolve the issue:
Give Live full disk access (macOS only)
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
- Find Ableton Live in the list. If it is not listed, click + and navigate to your Live application to add it.
- Make sure the toggle next to Ableton Live is on, then quit and relaunch Live.
Check the Splice samples folder location (macOS and Windows)
Verify that the Splice Samples folder points to the correct default location in Live's Settings:
- In Live, open Settings and go to the Library tab.
- Find the Splice Samples Folder field and check that it matches the default path for your system:
- Mac: Macintosh HD/Users/[Username]/Music/Ableton/User Library/Samples
- Win: C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library\Samples
- If the path is different, click the folder icon next to the field, navigate to the default location above, and confirm.
Note: If the Splice Samples folder is on an external drive, the drive must be connected and mounted before opening Live. If the drive is disconnected after Live has launched, drag and drop will stop working. Reconnect the drive and restart Live to restore it.
Check folder permissions
macOS
- Open Finder and navigate to the Splice Samples folder: Macintosh HD/Users/[Username]/Music/Ableton/User Library/Samples
- Right-click the folder and select Get Info.
- Scroll to Sharing & Permissions and check that your user account is set to Read & Write.
- If it shows Read only, click the lock icon to unlock, then change the permission to Read & Write.
Windows
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the Splice Samples folder: C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library\Samples
- Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
- Select your user account from the list, make sure Full control is checked under Allow, then click OK.
Login problems
Make sure you are logged into the correct Splice account inside the integration. If the wrong account is active:
- Log out of your Splice account on the Splice website (splice.com).
- Return to the Splice panel inside Live and click Login to re-authenticate with the correct account.
Note: If login issues persist after following these steps, contact Splice Support.
Getting logged out automatically (macOS)
You may be automatically logged out of the Splice integration when opening older Live projects. To fix this:
- Fully quit Live.
- Open Keychain Access — press Cmd+Space to enter Spotlight search, then type "Keychain Access", and press Return. You may need to enter your password to access your keychain.
- In the search bar, type splice.
- Find the Splice-related entry — it is usually named com.splice.ableton-live-integration.ableton-live-integration.
- Double-click the entry and open the Access Control tab.
- Select Allow all applications to access this item and click Save.
- Reopen Live. The integration should now remain logged in, even with older projects.
