RNBO Move Takeover FAQ
RNBO Move Takeover lets you export custom patches to Ableton Move hardware and create audio/MIDI applications. This article answers questions about licensing requirements, authoring RNBO patches, and running existing RNBO devices on Move.
What is RNBO?
RNBO is a library and toolchain developed by Cycling ‘74 that can export user-made patches as portable code and directly compile that code to targets such as VSTs, Max externals, Raspberry Pi, and Ableton Move.
What is RNBO Move Takeover?
RNBO Move Takeover is a tool that allows you to take over Move hardware and create custom Audio/MIDI applications on Move. RNBO Move Takeover is an experimental alpha hardware target, which means it’s an early test version and may not yet include all features.
What content can I test or build with RNBO Move Takeover?
Cycling ‘74 provides documentation to get set up and start building your own custom instruments for the Move, and/or explore example device content like RNBO versions of Granulator 3, Learning Synth’s Poli (Mono), NoiseField, EZ101, RNBO Guitar Pedals, and more.
What's required to use RNBO Move Takeover?
RNBO Move Takeover requires a Move device, a full Max license, and a RNBO add-on license. Note that it's not possible to use Max for Live for RNBO patch authoring.
RNBO Move Takeover can be used in two ways:
Full access to authoring RNBO device content (patches): This requires owning a full Max License and RNBO add-on, and provides the most flexibility to create custom devices to run on Move and other RNBO targets. Since Max for Live alone is not sufficient, a crossgrade offer is available for owners of Max for Live.
Running already-authored RNBO device content: All Move owners can, without owning a Max or RNBO license, install RNBO Move Takeover, import devices, import and export RNBO Web Interface graphs, and use existing bundled example content like RNBO versions of Granulator 3, Learning Synth’s Poli (Mono), NoiseField, EZ101, RNBO Guitar Pedals, and more.
Existing devices can be connected into custom user graphs with custom mapping via the RNBO Web Interface. Devices made by users with RNBO authoring access (see 1.), can be imported or exported via the RNBO Web Interface.
Can I run Max for Live devices via RNBO Move Takeover?
Max for Live devices don't work directly in RNBO Move Takeover Mode. To use a Max for Live device on Move, it must first be ported to RNBO. Note that RNBO supports only a subset of Max features, so devices that use the Live Object Model API or other unsupported features cannot be ported. However, many devices that don't use these features can be ported to RNBO.
- To port devices to RNBO, full Max and RNBO licenses are required.
- Once a Max for Live device is ported to RNBO and exported as a .rnbopack file, that .rnbopack file can be installed by Move owners that do not have a Max or RNBO License, allowing Move owners to run RNBO ports of Max for Live devices.
Troubleshooting issues with RNBO on Move
RNBO on Move is an experimental alpha feature, so Ableton Technical Support is not available. If you encounter issues with RNBO on Move, please contact Cycling ‘74 Support or reach out to the Discord Community.
