How to reset Live

Resetting Live returns the application to its default state. Performing a reset of Live can help rule out any problematic custom settings or template files when troubleshooting. 

Reset Live 11: Mac
Reset Live 11: Windows
Live 10 and earlier

Resetting Live clears the following and restores to default:

• Live's Preferences, including Audio and MIDI settings
• Template Set
• Undo History

After a reset of Live, you'll need to re-enable your hardware devices and plug-in folders, re-enter custom input/output names, and re-select any custom settings in Live's Preferences.

Note: The instructions below specify certain files to delete. Rather than deleting them, if you prefer, you can move these files to a different location such as the Desktop. If resetting Live doesn't solve the issue, you can then move them back to their original locations to restore custom settings.

Live 11

Reset Live 11: Mac

First, delete the Preferences file. 

1. 1. Close Live.
   2. In Finder, select the Go Menu, then hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
   3. Open the Library folder that appears. 
      
   4. Scroll down to open the enclosed folders Preferences > Ableton.
      This opens the path, usually hidden, Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Ableton. (More info: how to access hidden folders on Mac.)
   5. Open the folder for your current version of Live, for example Live 11.2.5. 
   6. Drag the file Preferences.cfg to the trash.
   7. If the folder Undo is present, delete this as well. 

Next, locate and delete the current Template Set:

1. 1. Open Live's User Library, usually located in Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library.
   2. Delete the folder Templates.

After these steps, re-launch Live.

Reset Live 11: Windows

1. 1. Close Live.
   2. In Windows Explorer's address bar, type %AppData%.
   3. Click the down arrow, and select Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming.
      
   4. Open the folder Ableton.
   5. Find and open the folder for your current version of Live, for example Live 11.2.5, then open Preferences.
   6. Delete Preferences.cfg.
   7. If a folder named Undo is present, delete this as well. 

Next, locate and delete the current Template Set:

1. Open Live's User Library, usually located in Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library
2. Delete the folder Templates

After these steps, re-launch Live.

Live 10 and earlier

Reset Live 10: Mac

1. Close Live.
2. In Finder, open this hidden folder (where x.x.x is the installed version of Live, eg. 10.1.30): :
   Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live x.x.x

3. Delete Preferences.cfg, Undo folder (in Live 9 this is Undo.cfg) and Template.als (if present).
4. Re-launch Live.

Reset Live 10: Windows

1. Close Live.
2. In Windows Explorer, open this hidden folder (where x.x.x is the installed version of Live, eg. 10.1.30):
   Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live x.x.x\Preferences

3. Delete Preferences.cfg, Undo folder (in Live 9 this is Undo.cfg) and Template.als (if present).
4. Re-launch Live.
