Silence or white noise at regular intervals

In Ableton Live, if silence or white noise occurs at regular intervals, the most common cause is a third-party plug-in in demo or trial mode. Free plug-in demo versions often restrict continuous use either with a sporadic white noise or by intermittently muting audio output. This can be fixed by authorizing or purchasing the trial device, or by removing it from your Live Set.

Below are examples of limitations that developers place on trial or demo versions of VST2, VST3, and AU plug-ins to encourage users to purchase the full version:

  • Intermittent muting / audio dropouts
The plug-in occasionally mutes itself or inserts silence every few seconds (e.g., every 30 seconds, 3 seconds of silence.)
  • Beep or noise overlays
A periodic tone, beep, or burst of white noise is added to the output to disrupt usage without purchase.
  • No preset saving or loading
You can't save or recall custom settings in the demo version.
  • Limited feature access
Certain features or modules (e.g., advanced modulation, oversampling, or multi-band processing) are disabled.
  • Time-limited playback
The plug-in only processes audio for a short time (e.g., 15 minutes) before needing to be reloaded.
  • Demo expiration
The plug-in can be used only for a limited number of days (e.g., 14-day trial).
