Max for Live devices can't be edited after Presonus Studio One installation

  • Live Versions: 8.1 - 9
  • Operating System: WIN Vista, WIN 7

  • When trying to edit a Max for Live device, the error message “Access denied, ID: eOS : 5 / path : 3” is shown.
  • Max for Live devices can otherwise be used and played.
  • Max/MSP is not starting stand-alone.
  • Presonus Studio One is installed.

A bug in the GEAR driver licensed by Presonus Studio One causes user group settings to be modified and thus prevent other applications from working correctly.

Repair the changed folder access settings:

  • Locate the folder C:\ProgramData in Windows Explorer (this folder might be hidden by default).
  • Right-click on the folder and select “Properties” from the context menu.
  • Show the “Security” tab.
  • Click the “Edit” button in Properties window and confirm a possible UAC elevation request with “OK”.
  • Click “Add” to add other user or group and add the user that suffers from the changed settings.
  • Confirm with “OK”.
  • In the Permission section, for the added user, check “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights.
  • Confirm with “OK”.

Additional Information

  • We recommend to run Live (and Max/Msp) with admin rights.
  • Official Presonus statement & workaround
  • This issue is fixed with Presonus Studio One versions since 1.6.3 when installing them initially. Updating older versions won't reset the changed user settings - this has always to be done manually.
