Creating new or blank Template Sets

  • Live Versions: All
  • Operating System: All

Live 11

Note: In Live 11 you can save Templates directly to Live's Browser.

Saving a new Template Set

You can create your own Templates from the current Set by clicking
File > Save Live Set as Template.

You can make any Template the default Set by selecting File > Save Live Set as Default Set or right-clicking on it in Live's Browser under Templates and selecting Set Default Live Set.

Creating a blank Template Set

To create a blank Template Set, navigate to Live's Browser under Templates, right-click on the DefaultLiveSet.als and select Set Default Live Set.

To create a blank set from outside of Live, navigate to the path below and remove your current Template Set:

Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library/Templates

Live 10 and earlier

Saving a new Template Set

  • Load the Live Set you want to use as the Template
  • Go to Live's Preferences > File / Folder
  • Next to "Save Current Set as Default," select "Save"

Creating a blank Template Set

To return the Default Set to the factory state, delete the existing Template.als file in this location:

  • Windows
    \Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live x.x.x\Preferences\Template.als
  • Mac
    /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live x.x.x/Template.als

Note: These folders are hidden by default. Here's how to access hidden folders on Windows and Mac OS X.

Creating multiple Template Sets

You can also create additional template Sets for different types of projects, each with its own unique configuration of tracks, devices, etc. To do this, create a folder called “Templates” within your User Library. Any Sets saved to this folder can be used as templates: they will load with the saved configuration as a new Set, with the name Untitled.als.
