Sampling into Move via USB-C
Move's USB-C port can be selected as an audio source. This allows you to sample audio from devices like computers, tablets, or phones directly into Drum Sampler or Melodic Sampler. Most devices that support audio over USB can send audio into Move, using the correct adapter.

Setting up Move for sampling via USB-C
To start sampling audio on Move via USB-C, follow the steps in the Ableton Move Manual section Sampling to enter Sampling mode and record into an empty Drum Rack Pad or Sampler device.
To Select USB-C as a sampling input source:
- Press the Sampling button.
- Then press the wheel to change the input source.
- Choose USB-C to sample from your connected device.
Supported connection types
To connect Move with an iOS device, we recommend Apple certified cables and adapters.
Sampling into Move via USB-C only works with devices that support USB Audio Class 2.0 (UAC2). For this reason, it might not be possible to sample into Move from some Android devices. As a workaround, if your device has a built-in headphone jack, you can use the necessary adapters to route audio into Move's audio input.
Lightning port devices
Move functions as a USB "Client device" and must be connected to a "Host device." Most mobile phones and tablets are classified as Client devices. However, with the adapters listed below, you can convert them into Host devices to enable an audio connection with Move:
- Lightning to USB-A adapter + USB-A to USB-C cable
- Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter + USB-A to USB-C cable
Note: To sample audio into Move from a Lightning port device, a Lightning to USB adapter is required. Lightning to USB-C cables are not supported.
USB-C Host devices
To connect Move to a USB-C Host device, use one of the following options:
- USB-C to USB-C cable. This connection draws battery power from your connected device.
-
USB-C to USB-C with Ableton USB Splitter Cable. Connect the splitter cable to Move's USB-C port. Then, plug the USB-C Host device into the data port (marked with a computer symbol), and connect the power supply to the splitter cable's power port (marked with a lightning symbol).
Troubleshooting USB-C audio connection
If you encounter issues with sampling into Move, first update Move.
Adapters and cable connections
- Some USB cables are intended for charging, such as those that come with bluetooth headphones. These supply power only and cannot send audio over USB-C.
- Move has been tested with Apple certified adapters and cables. While third-party adapters may work, they are not supported.
- When first connecting Move to a tablet such as an iPad, you may be presented with a dialog asking “Are you connecting a pair of headphones?” In this case, choose Other Device.
- The connected device must be acting as a USB Host. Lightning to USB-C cables are not supported, since these do not convert devices into Host devices.
Audio
- Audio interfaces cannot be used to send audio into Move via USB-C.
- Move requires the volume of the connected device be set to maximum. The device's volume is automatically increased once connected to Move.
Power
Whenever possible, connect Move to a power source so Move doesn't draw power from your mobile device. To connect to power and a device at the same time, use the Ableton USB Splitter Cable.
