Move Charging FAQ

Move has one USB-C port, which is used for charging the battery. This port can also be used for connecting Move to your computer to control Live and transfer data, and for using Move as an audio interface.

Move USB-C port

To charge Move, the original included wall power supply is recommended. While Move is connected to a USB-C port on your computer or hub, the battery will charge if the port supplies sufficient power. Move cannot be charged from a USB-A port.

USB power requirements

To charge the battery when Move is connected to a computer, make sure the port supplies at least 7.5W (minimum) or 15W (recommended). Not all USB-C ports provide sufficient power, and not all ports on the same device supply equal power levels (see table below), especially if other devices are also connected. The following table shows the expected charging for each power source:

Power Source Charging Speed
Included power supply (15W 5V/3A) Recommended to charge Move battery
Powered USB-C hub / docking station
15W or greater Battery charges.
7.5W Battery charges slowly.
less that 7.5W  Battery does not charge.
Computer USB-C port
15W
Battery charges.
7.5W Battery charges slowly.
Unpowered USB hub Battery does not charge.
USB-A 4.5W or 2.5W Battery does not charge.

Note:
Control Live Mode and transferring data work regardless of the USB-C power level.

USB charging tips

When Move is connected to a USB-C port supplying only 7.5W, follow these tips to improve charging time:

  • Set LED brightness to Mid or Low. For more information visit Move manual.
  • Disconnect MIDI devices from USB-A port.

Do I need the Ableton USB-C splitter cable to charge Move?

The USB-C splitter cable for Ableton products can be used as an accessory with Move to connect to both the power supply and your computer at the same time. This must be used with the original included power supply. The USB-C splitter cable for Ableton products is exclusively to be used with Ableton products and is not compatible with other devices. Move charging FAQ

Can Move be charged from my computer, or from a powered USB hub?
Move can be charged from a USB-C port that supplies 15W, and it can charge slowly from a 7.5W port. USB-A ports will not charge Move.

Where can I check Move’s battery level and charging status?
Press Shift + Step 2 to open Setup and display the charge percentage. Use the wheel to click on Battery to show the charging status (Charging or Disconnected).

How can I find what type of USB power Move is connected to?
Open Setup, then press Shift and click Battery to show the USB connection and power level.

Move is connected to a USB port on my computer. Why is it not charging?
Make sure Move is connected to a USB-C port supplying at least 7.5 W, or the recommended 15W for optimal charging. If less than 7.5W is supplied by your computer’s USB-C port, Move’s battery will not charge. If already fully charged, Move will not start re-charging via USB-C until the battery has first discharged below 95%.
Note: If connected to a USB-A port via an adapter, Move will not charge.

Move is connected via a USB hub. Why is it not charging?
Move is optimized for 15W of power, and requires a minimum of 7.5W to charge. We recommend using a hub that supplies 15W. Typically, a powered USB hub that integrates a dedicated USB-C power supply port, often called a "docking station," may supply enough power from the dedicated charging port to charge Move. As the amount of power provided by each individual port can vary, if Move is not charging you can try a different port.
Note: If connected to a USB-A port via an adapter, Move will not charge.

Is Thunderbolt 4 supported?
Move can be connected to Thunderbolt 4 ports, as this type of port supplies 15W of power.

What is the difference between Move’s USB ports?

USB-A USB-C
Supports connecting USB MIDI devices only. Does not support charging, audio interfaces, or storage devices Supports USB-C charging and data connection, for controlling Live in Control Live Mode and transferring content.

Can USB MIDI controllers be powered via Move’s USB-A port?
Move’s USB-A port provides a total of 500mA. Class-compliant MIDI devices can be connected to Move’s USB-A port individually, or as a group via a USB hub. If connected USB devices draw more than 500mA in total and are not self-powered, a powered USB hub is required. MIDI devices cannot be connected to Move’s USB-C port.

Is USB-C PD (Power Delivery) supported?
Move is designed for USB-C 15W, which is supported by most USB-C PD power supplies.

Can I use an adapter to connect Move to a USB-A port?
A USB-C > USB-A cable or adapter allows Move to control Live and transfer data. However, USB-A ports cannot charge Move.

Does Move automatically turn off?
Move does not turn off automatically. To prevent Move’s battery from discharging when not in use, press the power switch, then click the wheel to turn it off.
