Using MIDI with Move

Move supports MIDI input and output via the USB-A port. You can use USB MIDI to control external gear like synths and drum machines, and set up Move to receive or record input from other devices. MIDI input and output can be active simultaneously. MIDI send and receive channels can be configured for each track.

To use Move's latest features, please update Move's installed software when prompted.

Compatible MIDI controllers

Move hosts class-compliant, USB Low-Speed and USB Full-Speed MIDI devices, and it sends and receives Poly Aftertouch data. Only one USB MIDI device can be connected at a time.

USB powered devices

Move can deliver up to 500 mA of power on the USB MIDI Port. Certain MIDI controllers require more power; these can be connected using a powered USB hub. Please note that not all available MIDI devices are guaranteed to work.

MIDI Out

To send MIDI from Move:

  1. Connect Move via the USB-A port to external hardware.
  2. Press Shift + track button of the track you want to send MIDI from.
  3. Press the wheel to open the track's MIDI Out settings, then turn the wheel to select a Channel.

MIDI In

To receive MIDI from a MIDI controller or external hardware:

  1. Connect the MIDI controller to the USB-A port on the back of Move.
  2. Press Shift + track button of the track you want to receive MIDI on.
  3. Turn the wheel to select MIDI In, then press the wheel to open the track's MIDI In settings. Turn the wheel again to select Auto or a specific Channel.

Note: The MIDI In → Auto setting activates all MIDI input channels for the currently selected track, except for channels explicitly assigned to other tracks. For example, if the first track is set to MIDI In → Channel 5, and all other tracks are set to MIDI In → Auto, when any of the other tracks is selected, it will receive MIDI notes from channels 1-4 and 6-16, but not 5.

MIDI Sync

Move can send and receive MIDI clock and transport. This means you can sync USB MIDI devices that have internal sequencers and arpeggiators with Move, while using the same device to play sounds on Move.

To view or change MIDI Sync settings on Move:

  1. Go to Move Settings, scroll down to MIDI Sync and press the wheel to open MIDI Sync settings.
  2. Turn the wheel to toggle between Off, In and Out.

Recording MIDI input

To record MIDI notes from a MIDI controller or external hardware device:

  1. Select the track where you want to record MIDI.
  2. Adjust the MIDI In track setting to either Auto or the desired MIDI Channel. Make sure the MIDI Channel of your device matches your Move track input selection.
  3. The selected track will be armed automatically for MIDI input from your connected MIDI device.
  4. MIDI can be recorded using the Record button or the MIDI Capture button.

Unsupported MIDI devices and features

  • Hi-Speed USB devices, Channel Aftertouch, and MIDI CC are not supported.
  • MIDI mapping of external MIDI devices is not supported.
  • Move’s USB-A port functions as a USB Host and cannot connect to another USB Host, such as a computer. It is intended for connecting USB MIDI Devices only.
  • Move's USB-A port cannot connect to another USB-A port

Note: If you previously connected Move with version 1.4.1 or older installed, your Mac may not automatically recognize the newly forwarded MIDI port after a firmware update.

To fix this, follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect Move from your Mac.

  2. On your Mac, open Audio MIDI SetupMIDI Studio, and delete the existing Move device.

  3. Reconnect Move to your Mac.

This will allow macOS to correctly detect and register the updated MIDI port configuration.
