Using third-party MIDI Tools

As of Ableton Live 12, in Live Suite you can install third-party MIDI Transformation and Generator Tools.

Installing and managing custom third-party Max for Live MIDI Tools device by using the following folders located on your User Library: 

Mac: 

  • Transformations: ~/Music/Ableton/User Library/MIDI Tools/Transformations 
  • Generators: ~/Music/Ableton/User Library/MIDI Tools/Generators

Windows:

  • Transformations: \Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library\MIDI Tools\Transformations
  • Generators:  \Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library\MIDI Tools\Generators 

Downloaded third-party MIDI Tools devices can also be placed within these folders. You can also manually create the folder "MIDI Tools" within your User Library to store and organize the devices.

To install a third-party Max for Live MIDI Tools device, install the device to your Ableton User Library following these steps:

  1. Download the .amxd file for the device from the developer's website.
  2. In Live, drag the file into your Ableton User Library folder in Live's Browser.
  3. Open the MIDI Clip view for a Clip that contains MIDI notes.
  4. In the MIDI Transformation or Generator Tools view, open the dropdown menu for the Transformation/Generator Selector. At the bottom of this menu, select the tool under User:

  5. Follow the developer's instructions for how to use the tool's parameters. To apply the changes, click the Apply icon at the bottom right of the panel.
