What is ReWire?
ReWire is a software protocol developed by Propellerhead which lets you synchronize two DAWs and stream audio and MIDI from one to the other on the same computer.
Live can run either as ReWire master or as ReWire slave, as can some other DAW's. However many DAW's will only run as ReWire Master. If your specific DAW is not listed here, check their manual to see whether they support ReWire Slave or Master, or both.
How do I set up ReWire with another DAW?
The dedicated article Using Live and ReWire shows how to set it up with several common DAW's.
I'm having issues using ReWire, how can I troubleshoot?
Check our article Troubleshooting ReWire issues.
How can I get more ReWire channels in Live?
You can enable up to 64 ReWire channels in Live by using the Options.txt file.
Can I use Max for Live devices when Live is running as ReWire slave?
You can use Max for Live devices only while running Live as ReWire master or as a stand-alone application.
Can I access VST plug-ins in Live when it is running as ReWire slave?
You can use VST Plug-ins in Live only while running Live as ReWire master or as a stand-alone application.
Can I pre-listen to my audio files via a separate audio output when running Live in ReWire slave mode?
The audio hardware is used by the ReWire master, and Live does not have access to the outputs, so it is not possible to pre-listen via a separate audio output when Live is running as ReWire slave.
How do I route individual tracks via ReWire?
You must select separate outputs in Live via the Output Channel chooser in the In/Out View and set the ReWire master application to receive the input on separate tracks. Please see our ReWire tutorials for instructions.
Can I run Live and two other ReWire applications at the same time in ReWire mode?
Yes, if your computer is fast enough to run all three applications at the same time.
I'm using Cubase, and I have no ReWire mixer channels left. Is it possible to limit the number of ReWire channels in Live?
Yes, you can limit ReWire channels in Live by using the Options.txt file.
Can I use ReWire with the Bridge?
Use of Ableton Live in ReWire mode is not recommended while running The Bridge, and Ableton Live will not work in ReWire slave mode when The Bridge is engaged. It is possible to use Live in ReWire master mode when The Bridge is engaged, but is untested.
